Is Aging NECESSARY?
Is aging necessary? Are the wrinkles and gray hair, weakening muscles, neurodegeneration, reduced cardiovascular function and increased risk of cancer that afflict organisms toward the end of their lives inevitable? Or are these age-related changes related to events in our lives that can be altered?
-
Why am I always so sore?
-
Why all the aches and stiffness?
-
Why am I getting wrinkles on my face?
-
How come I can't lose weight?
-
Why am I so forgetful?
The answers to these questions lie in how healthy we are, regardless of age. We know, though, that these questions occur more frequently and rapidly as we grow older.
As we age, our bodies change, internally as well as externally. Science has shown that the aging process and its "visible" indications are caused by what's happening inside our bodies.
Two of the main causes of aging have been attributed to:
- Declining levels of critical biological elements and hormones
- DNA, tissue and molecular damage due to Oxidative stress
Our hormones work together to regulate many bodily functions but as we age this process declines. Internally, our organs begin to shrink, become less active and produce fewer hormones and other essential bodily elements. Hormones are vital for repairing and regulating our body and when they drop in production, due to aging, it causes a decline in our body's ability to repair and regulate itself. The aging of our internal organs and decline in vital bodily elements causes a slowdown of our metabolism, weight gain, a reduction in sex drive, fragile bones, compromises to our immune system and causes painful problems that reduce our mobility.
Oxidative stress is the damage to cells caused by oxidation. Many, though, use the term to describe the aging process taking place inside our bodies. All forms of life maintain a reducing environment within their cells. This cellular environment is preserved by enzymes that maintain the reduced state through a constant input of metabolic energy. Disturbances in this normal state can cause toxic effects through the production of peroxides and free radicals that damage components of the cell such as lipids and DNA.
In other words, free radicals are attacking the structure of cells and destroying them. When we are young, the effects of free radicals are minor since the body has extensive repair and replacement mechanisms that function to keep cells and organs in working order. With age, the accumulated effects of free radical damage begin to take their toll. Damage from free radicals causes the deterioration of internal organs and all their problems as well as age spots and wrinkles, especially on the face.
