Cited from GlobeNet II Interview with Clinton Howard "The World's First Comprehensive Study of
Aloe""We looked through the medical literature but, strange as it seems, we could find no indication that any of the drug companies were seriously searching to find out if there just happened to be a medicine in aloe, the plant known throughout the world as the 'Medicine Plant'... "At that point I made a prayerful, personal commitment to undertake, through my company, the world's first comprehensive study of aloe vera. In 1981, I initiated construction of our own research laboratory to be dedicated exclusively to the aloe project. We invested more than a million dollars. "The research team worked on the aloe project for more than four years. One day they walked into my office with a small plate of white powder and said, 'Mr. Howard, this is it. The most active ingredient in aloe is a group of long chain polysaccharides'. "The isolation of the polysaccharides was not the end of the project. It was just the first step. In order to obtain FDA approval we had to determine the chemical properties of this polysaccharide, its safety and its action when introduced into the human body. "To accomplish those goals we began a new series of studies in 1986 - which continued until I retired as president of Carrington in October, 1990. During that period we discovered that aloe is not a drug or a medicine that works directly on a symptom or a disease. It is a dietary supplement that feeds the white cells of the immune system and allows them to work more effectively. Aloe feeds the immune system the nutrients it needs to help it be more effective in repairing damaged tissues and preventing or fighting many diseases. "We conducted clinical studies on humans with ulcerative colitis, viral skin infections such as herpes, cuts, burns and bedsores. We also conducted studies in Europe and in Canada on patients with AIDS. "We also hired Dr. Bob Carpenter to coordinate a series of studies at the Veterinary Medical School of Texas A&M. This research has received world side notice in health care literature, and led to the two government approvals for use of the aloe extract by veterinarians. "After I retired from Carrington, my wife Kathy and I traveled and visited several of the aloe farms and processing plants in Texas and Mexico. I was shocked to see that despite our published research, the aloe companies were still processing aloe as though it were orange juice. They pasteurized it, filtered it and even boiled it to drive off the water. Our research had shown that all these steps damage the active polysaccharides, reducing the strength of the aloe. I had only been 'retired' about four months, but the need was too great. I had to make a new commitment. I decided to start a new company to manufacture a high quality aloe drink and a line of skin care products that would provide the most potent and effective benefits of aloe. I named the company Royal BodyCare®.
"The term aloe vera as it appears on product labels informs the buyer only that the ingredients in the product was derived originally from aloe. It does not distinguish between the different ways the aloe may have been processed nor the extremely different forms in which it is sold as a result of those processes. It has been impossible for the aloe buyer to know anything about the quality, quantity, or the characteristics of aloe in such products. "In founding a skin care company in 1974, I found this to be a serious problem. Aloe growers and processors offered to sell us aloe in various forms; filtered, unfiltered, concentrated, pasteurized, or even the whole leaf ground with the leaf skin. Claims were made as to the potency of each form but there was no way to test or verify their claims. "In order to assure the quality of our products, we built a research laboratory in 1981 and instructed the scientists to develop a test to evaluate processed aloe vera in commercial products. We selected as a standard for comparison, 100 percent aloe vera gel as it comes from the freshly harvested leaf. "The standard for comparison was fresh, natural aloe gel from recently harvested leaves. Using state of the art chromatographic instruments, Dr. Phelps developed a new technique, which separates the polysaccharide polymers and identifies (over a one hour period of time) the simple food type sugars, which separate out in the first 15 minutes, and the long chain polymers characteristic of pure, natural aloe gel, which separate out in the 15-60 minute period. The individual peaks of these polymers create a "profile" of the product being tested and permit anyone to compare an unknown aloe product with the standard fresh aloe gel. CONCLUSION | "We believe that the goal of processing an aloe vera gel product should be to provide the customer aloe vera gel from the aloe leaf. With the new chromatographic test developed by Dr. Phelps in our laboratories, we can now, finally evaluate commercial aloe vera accurately. Now consumers may have confidence in the quality and natural characteristics of the aloe vera gel they choose. Of all other aloe liquids made by different processes and tested, TruAloe is the only one which provides essentially the same characteristics of fresh, natural aloe vera gel." - - Clinton Howard - - |
