Erectile Dysfunction (Ed) And Diabetes Type II

Erectile Dysfunction (Ed) And Diabetes Type IIIn a previous note I discussed how the prostate gland functions.  I explained that the prostate is part of the male sexual reproduction system, how it works and the problems associated with it. Today, I would like to discuss two additional conditions which affect the male sexual reproductive system; Erectile Dysfunction (ED), (the inability to attain or maintain an erection; previously known as impotence) and its relationship to Type II Diabetes.

These conditions occur in males as they reach their fourth or fifth decade of life. All these conditions start slowly and the signs/symptoms are mild.  They are usually dismissed as just part of the aging process. This dismissal is, in part, because the male reaches his sexual peak between 17 and 25 years of age and has already experience a slow decline in his virility. There is, however, good news for the aging male.  Most of these health problems can be slowed down and treated with early diagnosis and Natural Medicine.

Although Allopathic Medicine does have pharmaceuticals for these conditions, they come with side effects. In addition, the use of medications also indicates that the problem is more advanced and, if the condition is manageable, the cost of treatment will be much greater. Prevention and treatment with Natural Medicines will make life more enjoyable.

Most patients do not even know that they have developed Type II Diabetes.  This condition is caused by the elevation of blood sugars called glucose. It is most common in individuals who have a sedentary lifestyle and who are not at their ideal body weight. Type II Diabetes is one disease which has shown a dramatic rise in incidence in the last 30 years due to increase consumption of sugar and Obesity.  The initial signs and symptoms of Type II Diabetes are vague and include:

  • increased thirst
  • increased urination
  • fatigue
  • wounds that heal slowly
  • early signs of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Resent studies indicate that ED is under-reported and under-diagnosed due to reluctance among patients and physicians to discuss this problem.

If you feel that you may have some of the above signs and symptoms.

The first step is to diagnose the condition to find out if you are pre-diabetic, a true diabetic, or if you have another condition. Pre-diabetics can most often correct the problem through lifestyle changes which include:

  • dietary - change to a hypoglycemic diet
  • exercise
  • weight loss
  • supplementation

If the diabetes is left untreated, the condition will advance causing pathophysiology changes in the neurological system and the epithelial cells of the cardiovascular system. These cardiovascular changes will lead to an increase incidence of heart attacks and strokes. The peripheral neurological pathology or nerve damage will cause loss of sensation from the sensory nerves.  This can contribute to lower leg problems such as ulceration of the feet.  As the patient can no long feel their feet, this would obviously also contribute to decrease sensation in the penis.

The treatment of choice:

  • Use preventative Natural Medicine to control the diabetes through the use of a hypoglycemic diet, weight loss, exercise and supplementation.  A home glucose meter to check blood sugar levels is also an important tool in addition to physiological and/or stress counseling,

The following medical tests should also be done on a regular basis:

  • Urinalysis
  • Urine Ph,
  • Blood glucose (sugar) levels
  • Fasting Glucose
  • PSA (prostate specific antigen test)
  • A1C - in more advanced cases  (a simple lab test showing your average blood glucose level over the last 3 months)

Natural Medical treatments for the Erective Dysfunction (ED) would include products which contain:

  • Chromium - Known as the “Glucose Tolerance Factor”*
  • Zinc - in a multi vitamin mineral supplement
  • Nitric Oxide
  • L-Arginine
  • Horny Goat Weed
  • Koran Red Ginseng
  • Gota Kola
  • Yohimbi

  *Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF)
Biologically active Chromium is the basic component of what is known as the “Glucose Tolerance Factor.” GTF is not a trace element or a vitamin so it is classed as a nutrient. The Chromium in this factor and insulin work together to ease the progress of glucose into cells. Lack of Chromium will block this critical process.  Although GTF chromium is available in many foods, most of us do not get enough. The sugars in our diets, stress and aging all reduce the amount of chromium that is available for use. Supplementation with chromium is of vital importance for individuals with diabetes, hypoglycemia and obesity. In several studies, GTF Chromium supplementation has also been shown to assist in weight loss.
