Misunderstood and Neglected Problems

Misunderstood and Neglected ProblemsDo you know what a prostate is or what it does? If you answered yes, you are in the minority since most men and their partners know little about this topic. If your answer is no, it’s time to learn more about this subject given that over 30 million men in North America suffer from prostate problems that negatively affect the quality of their lives.

It is inevitable as men age that there will be changes in the health of their prostate gland. These changes will have a significant impact on their lives if the early signs and symptoms of problems are not addressed. The male psyche has a tendency to ignore or minimize the warning signs of changes in their prostate function. Many find the symptoms too embarrassing to talk about or else believe the problem too trivial to warrant a visit to the Doctor. Most wait till the situation becomes intolerable, at which point it may have already become a very serious health issue. The unsettling facts are:

  • By about age 50, almost fifty percent of all men will begin to develop symptoms of an enlarged prostate known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). As well, nearly ninety percent of those in their 70s will acquire this condition. In North America it is very common for men over 40 to start facing prostate problems.
  • Every year over 200,000 men in North America will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 35,000 will die of it. Prostate cancer is second only to skin cancer and is the most diagnosed cancer in men. The incidence of prostate cancer increases with age.
  • Prostatitis is an concern for men of any age group and affects one third of men over the age of 50.

Do not let these statistics get you down. The good news is that there are natural ways to drastically reduce those odds. You can stop prostate trouble before it starts. Let’s look at what a prostate is and what does it does.

Cancer, the most frequent male malignancyThe Prostate
The prostate is a small gland in the male reproductive system, located below the bladder, which produces seminal fluid. Its main function is to store and secrete this slightly alkaline fluid which is milky in appearance. This fluid usually constitutes twenty five to thirty percent of the volume of the semen along with seminal vesicle fluid and sperm. The alkalinity prolongs the life of sperm by neutralizing the acidity of the vaginal tract. This gives the sperm more activity, a longer survival rate and superior protection of their genetic material.

A healthy human prostate is a little larger than a walnut and surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. Because this gland surrounds the urethra that drains the bladder, prostate disorders often affect urination This gland also contains muscles that help eject semen during ejaculation.

The most common prostate disorders are:

  • Prostatitis
  • Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Cancer, the most frequent male malignancy

All prostate disorders are connected with acid-base imbalances or age related changes in steroid hormones. Testosterone declines in men by age forty and a variant of the hormone called dihydrotestosterone increases. This promotes cell growth and, in turn, prostate enlargement. As well, the female-associated hormone estrogen also increases in men with age and has the same effect. The most common symptoms of any prostate disorder include; decreased flow, increased frequency and an increase in the number of times that an individual is awakened during the night to urinate.

ProstatitisProstatitis
Prostatitis is a general term used to describe the inflammation of the prostate gland, in men. Because the term is so universal, it does not sufficiently describe the range of problems that can be associated with prostate inflammation. It is the most common prostate problem for men under 50. So common, in fact, that close to half of all men will be treated for it in sometime in their lifetime. There are several types of prostatitis recognized which are broken down into two main groups.

  • Acute (meaning it develops suddenly) bacterial prostatitis, a bacterial infection of the prostate gland that requires urgent medical treatment. Symptoms of acute bacterial prostatitis are often severe.
  • Chronic (meaning it develops slowly over several years) bacterial prostatitis which is a somewhat rare condition that usually presents itself as an intermittent urinary tract infection.

Nearly one quarter of all men who have urinary problems have prostatitis and it is easily confused with other infections in the urinary tract. Prostatitis symptoms may include the following:

  • Difficult urination
  • Painful urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Low-back pain
  • Fever
  • Pain in the groin
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Chills
  • Aching muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Blood or urine in semen
  • Pus cells in semen
  • Low sperm count
  • Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
  • Prostatitis is usually not considered a severe disease and it does NOT lead to cancer. But it is painful and particularly inconvenient
  • Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Prostate enlargement is much more common than most people realize. It is the most common prostate health issue among men, usually affecting those over forty.
  • By age fifty, nearly half of all men will begin to develop an enlarged prostate.
  • An enlarged prostate is a non-cancerous condition. There are no known links between BPH and prostate cancer.
  • It is a condition associated with aging. The older you get the more likely you are to acquire symptoms of prostate enlargement.
  • It is usually due to hormonal changes or acid-base imbalances.
  • The symptoms occur when the enlarged prostate puts pressure on the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the bladder.
  • Symptoms will gradually worsen as the prostate slowly continues to enlarge. This interferes with sleep and routine activities.
  • BPH can slow down a man’s activities and interfere with his lifestyle. It can also lead to more serious health problems.
  • The symptoms of an enlarged prostate will vary with the individual. For instance, some men may have difficulty starting to urinate while others may experience an urgent need to urinate.

FamilyWomen and BPH
Women should be familiar with the symptoms of prostate enlargement in their partners. They must become “Prostate Advocates” for their men and look for changes in behavior. It is no fun going out if your partner continually needs to be near a bathroom or if your social activities increasingly revolve around frequent bathroom visits. Even simple car trips mean constant lookouts for rest stops.

When BPH symptoms affect your partner, your quality of life is also affected. Therefore, women must look for changes in behavior. Does your partner make frequent trips to the bathroom during the night? Does he grumble about incomplete emptying of the bladder, difficulty in starting urination, frequent urination or its weak flow? Does he avoid and no longer enjoy social activities because he always has to be near a bathroom? If so, these symptoms point to an enlargement of the prostate. If you notice changes in your partners urinary patterns, it may be up to you to help him to make the changes necessary or to seek professional help. Often, looking after your man’s prostate symptoms only means making simple lifestyle changes. So use observation, knowledge of his family history and informed education to protect his health and your piece of mind.

The good news is that, normally, an enlarged prostate will not diminish your partner’s sex drive or cause erectile dysfunction. Some of the indicators such as his having a burning need to urinate can be a distraction, though. So in reality the awkward and embarrassing symptoms of an enlarged prostate may put your partner out of the romantic mood.

Prostate Cancer
The statistics are stark and alarming. This year, 200,000 North American men will find out they have prostate cancer. It is the most prevalent diagnosed cancer in men, second only to cancers of the skin. Over 35,000 American men are expected to die from prostate cancer this year alone.

Prostate cancer is found most frequently in men over the age of fifty. However, many men who have developed this cancer never have symptoms, undergo no treatment and eventually die of other causes. This is because most of those affected are over the age of 60 and cancer of the prostate is, in general, slow-growing. For these and other reasons, they often die of causes unrelated to the prostate cancer, such as other faster growing cancers or heart disease. This is why it is recommended to have a PSA ever test year after age 40.

Many factors, including diet and genetics have been implicated in the development of prostate cancer. The presence of prostate cancer may be indicated by symptoms, prostate specific antigens, physical examination or biopsy. Most doctors think immediately of eliminating the problem without thought to the disturbing side effects of their treatment that can critically diminish their patient’s quality of life. Furthermore, 35 percent of the men afflicted find themselves dealing with the return of the disease within just five years. Thankfully there are natural ways to prevent and treat prostate cancer with alternative self-healing approaches. Contact the Wolfe Clinic for more information on your different options.

Prevention
What can be done to prevent the onset of prostate problems and help your body to heal current conditions? As stated in the beginning, the good news is that there are natural ways to help. You can stop prostate trouble before it starts.

Proper Nutrition

Many professionals consider prostate disorders as a nutritional diseases. In North America our emphasize is on animal derived foods, such as red meat, dairy products and eggs, all of which accumulate environmental toxins. On the other hand, fruit and vegetable-rich diets provide a positive and protective effect.

  • Eat organic foods whenever possible. Fresh organically grown fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients and fiber.
  • Berries (blackberries, saskatoon berries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, etc)
  • Stay hydrated, drink only clean and hydrating water.
  • Rotate foods, especially common allergens, such as milk products, eggs, wheat and yeast foods.
  • Eat natural, seasonal cuisine.
  • Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds and for omnivarians, some low-fat dairy products and fresh fish (not shellfish) and organic poultry.
  • Cook in iron, stainless steel, glass or porcelain.
  • Avoid or minimize red meats, cured meats, organ meats, refined foods, canned foods, sugar, salt, saturated fats, alcohol and nicotine.
  • Avoid hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.
  • Limit your intake of refined sugars.
  • Consume foods that contain the essential omega-3 fatty acids, include flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds.
  • Essential fatty acid (EFA) supplements. In studies, a majority of men who were given EFA supplements had improved libido, a reduction in the enlargement of the prostate and a cessation of the urge to urinate during the night. One tablespoon of flaxseed oil a day will make sure you are getting enough essential fatty acids.

Food CombiningFood Combining
A healthy diet requires proper food combining. Your body needs specific types of nutrients in order to function optimally and food combining will help your digestive system to efficiently deliver those nutrients.

Vitamin D
Research has found that low levels of vitamin D is linked to the development of prostate cancer. One study found that supplementing with vitamin D made a 60% risk reduction in all of the cancers they were testing for. Other proven studies have found up to a 77% decrease in the actual rates of some cancers, not just a risk reduction. That’s incredible for a single supplement!

Healthy Water
Only through water does living long and healthy become possible. Water is the most important compound you put into your body. Therefore, it follows that, health-wise, it will be the best or the nastiest thing you consume. We at the Wolfe Clinic are passionate on this subject because our main concern is the positive or negative health consequences of the water you consume. All natural health programs and protocols simply work faster and perform better when you consume clean and healthy water. Please, call us for more information on healthy water.

Healthy Heat
The list of health benefits and conditions that have, reportedly, been reduced or improved with the use of Far-infrared (FIR) heat is vast. From eliminating toxins to pain relief, regular use of FIR heat is an important tool in the effort to retain or regain one’s good health.

Acid/Alkaline Balance
Keep a normal Acid/Alkaline balance within your body. The human body requires specific chemical processes to work efficiently and properly in order to stay healthy and ward off disease. These reactions will only operate within a limited pH (potential of hydrogen) range. When this equilibrium is maintained, most diseases cannot exist.

A fit body and sound mind are your most important assets and a healthy lifestyle is the only way to attain and sustain that goal. You can prevent prostate problems before they start. Just make the changes that will result in a longer, happier and healthier life. To do so you need to educate yourself and follow some easy strategies for lasting health. In other words, give your body what it needs; healthy hydrating water, clean air, regular healthy meals, proper supplementation, moderate exercise and sufficient rest.

It is important to always be proactive and focus your conscious attention on maintaining your good health. This is a much better approach than treating chronic illnesses’ after they happen.
