How Do I Catch these Bugs?Oh, the misery! Your head is pounding, your whole body aches, your nose is running and that persistent cough kept you up half the night. What to do? More importantly, what should you have done to avoid this situation? At a time like this it is hard to help yourself, let alone look after a family.

Cold and flu viruses are lurking everywhere you go, but there are simple steps to stay healthy. Prevention can mean the difference between an enjoyable holiday season spent with family and friends or a miserable week spent alone in bed.

Your goal should be to keep you, your family and co-workers healthy this holiday season. All you need do is educate yourself and follow some simple strategies for lasting health.

How Do I Catch these Bugs?
When you take care of yourself it is hard to catch most common viruses. If your Inner Terrain is in good shape and maintained properly, your body’s natural defenses are very capable of fighting off most of these diseases; at least in the short term.

The likelihood of you becoming a victim of a virus increases, however, if you are overtired, physically exhausted, poorly nourished or have generally been neglecting your body.

As well, there is a direct relation between your risk of catching the flu or a cold and the amount of time spent in contact with an infected person. That is why families tend to get sick together.

The most common route of infection is not from sitting in a draft or walking barefoot in the rain but from body contact or touching a surface that has been coughed or sneezed on. That is why, when you have a bug or are near someone infected, washing your hands frequently and wiping down any surfaces you touch are so important. As well refrain from sharing food, talking in close groups and shaking hands. After all the holiday season is a social time, and anything we can do to stop or slow down the spread of cold and flu viruses is good for everyone.

The Symptoms
The symptoms of a cold or flu will come on suddenly and last for approximately 7 to 10 days unless a secondary bacterial infection occurs, as in bronchitis or pneumonia. These lower respiratory infections will increase the duration and intensity of discomfort.

Those symptoms are fever, malaise, sneezing, sore throat, myalgia, chills, fatigue, pharyngitis, (a nonproductive cough) headache, rhinorrhea and muscle pain. If it develops into influenza pneumonia, your symptoms will also include frothy white and sometimes blood tinged sputum, chest pain and, of course, more coughing. As with most viral conditions, the young and the old tend to be more vulnerable and more seriously affected than most.

The Causes
There are more than 300 different viruses that can cause colds and flu. Each time you catch one it is caused by a distinct virus (i.e. adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, coronavirus). Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and not even considered alive.

Statistics on the Flu VirusBasically they are tiny clusters of genetic material surrounded by a protein wrapper and only capable of creating more copies of themselves. This they do very well. They can’t reproduce on their own, so they first infect a host; someone like yourself. Then they hijack your cells and force them to make billions of copies of themselves. This process makes you feel like you’ve been run over by a truck. It also makes you cough and sneeze and spread the virus to other people.

It is wrong to believe that there are easily available drugs that can effectively kill these viruses. Most people mistakenly think that antibiotics will help with the cold or flu. Antibiotics, including penicillin, DO NOT have any effect on viruses. I repeat; they DO NOT have any effect on viruses and should only be used in the treatment of secondary bacterial infections that may complicate a cold or flu.

These medications will actually prolong your suffering if taken when not needed, since they will kill the good bacteria in your body that help the immune response. For many, what used to be mild 24 or 48 hour flu are turning into 2 week nightmares and what used to be a week-long cold seems to hang on forever. The overuse of antibiotics as well as lifestyle are the likely reasons.

Keep in mind that viruses are not alive. The do not have brains. You do! So use it to outwit those bugs and protect yourself and your loved ones.

Statistics on the Flu Virus

The flu can be deadly. In North America, an estimated 25–50 million cases of the flu are currently reported each year. Leading to 150,000 hospitalizations and 30,000–40,000 deaths. Flu-related deaths usually result from pneumonia and from complications of cardiopulmonary conditions and other chronic diseases. Deaths of older adults account for more than 90% of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza.

The 1918 - 1919 flu killed more people than those who perished in WWI. It caused the greatest number of deaths ever recorded from an infectious disease in a single year, by far more than the black plague or any other infectious disease: 20 million people.

The Hong Kong Flu of 1968 killed 700,000 people.

The Flu and its complications are the 6th leading cause of death among children, aged 4 & up.

Influenza is the number one cause of death from infection in the North America, even though other diseases dominate the headlines.

With the onset of the flu season, the first line of defense with viral conditions are molecules called cytokines. The Hong Kong flu of 1997 was invisible to the body’s immune defenses because one genetic mutation let the virus go unrecognized by these cytokines. Viruses are amazingly adaptable and keep scientists in constant pursuit of their elusive behavior.

What is it about these viruses that are so difficult to control? Each virus has its own strain containing an unstable gene which allows the virus to evolve continually as it migrates across continents and oceans. Consequently, it becomes uncontrollable in short order. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) monitor the movement of flu viruses to determine which strains hold the most potential for destruction. No geographical boundaries appear to deter their inevitable arrival. As each strain mutates, the medical system scrambles to develop the annual vaccine to address the upcoming altered version of the year before. This is indeed a full time occupation that keeps both the medical and media busy.

Today scientists and health officials are very concerned that an avian influenza virus and another influenza virus could combine into a new, very dangerous virus. One that could have a high death rate and could also spread between people easily. Were such a virus to emerge, it could cause a pandemic rivaling the great influenza pandemic of 1918-19, which killed 40 million to 50 million people.

For the last two years a virulent strain of avian influenza A (H5N1), has kept the World Health Organization worried as well as busy. They called it “the most serious known health threat facing the world,” and according to CDC:

The avian influenza A (H5N1) epizootic outbreak in Asia is not expected to diminish significantly in the short term. It is likely that H5N1 infection among birds has become endemic to the region and that human infections will continue to occur.

If these H5N1 viruses gain the ability for efficient and sustained transmission between humans, there is little preexisting natural immunity to H5N1 infection in the human population, and an influenza pandemic could result, with high rates of illness and death.

On 28 Sept. 2005, the head of the United Nations health agency has warned: There will be another influenza pandemic and failure to prepare for it appropriately will have “catastrophic consequences”, calling for national control plans worldwide and massive international collaboration to prevent the potential deaths of millions of people.

“There is a storm brewing that will test us all. We must anticipate it and prepare to the very best of our combined ability,”


World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Lee Jong-wook told ministers of health from throughout the Americas, noting that the next pandemic will likely spring from the current Asian bird flu outbreak. He called on the ministers to support the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza launched recently by United States President George W. Bush at the United Nations General Assembly.

“This initiative needs full international cooperation if it is to fulfill its aims. I ask you all to sign up and give it your active support,” he said. “Forecasts indicate that the political, social and economic costs of such a pandemic will be huge. I cannot emphasize this enough. Failure to take this threat seriously and prepare appropriately will have catastrophic consequences.”

Don’t Be Fooled!
It is common knowledge that Over the Counter drugs that target colds or flu have the ability to temporarily relieve symptoms. (This does not mean that they treat the cause!) Antibiotics, on the other hand, are clearly ineffective with the flu but even so, some doctors feel pressured to prescribe drugs to placate the demands of their patients.

Advertising has done an excellent job of convincing us that we should put our hope in the nasal spray or time-release remedies. It all sounds nice but they fail to say that the cumulative effect of these additional toxins in your system comes with a price. It is important to remember that the use of antibiotics serves to strip your natural immunity by depleting the good flora in the intestines. Drugs ultimately are not the answer!

Fever is not the enemy!
At the first sign of an infection most of us immediately reach for a Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Aspirin. What you probably don’t know, though, is that by lowering your fever you are actually defeating one of your body’s best defenses; fever. It is not the enemy! It is the human body’s most visible response to viral or bacterial infections; and a very effective one. You would never know that fact from the expensive PR we are subjected to by pharmaceutical and medical concerns. They have us treating this vital ally like it was part of the disease and not a part of the solution. As well, a number of studies have shown, clearly, that people who take aspirin and Tylenol suppress their body’s ability to produce antibodies to destroy viruses and bad bacteria.

Fever is not the evil it is portrayed to be by the drug companies who sell drugs like ibuprofen, acetaminophen (Tylenol™), and aspirin. The major use of these drugs is for the reduction of fever, which is actually a beneficial and normal physiological response of the body

Fever acts as a defense mechanism against a number of processes, mostly related to either infections or the presence of abnormal proteins in the bloodstream called pyrogenes. One of the most immediate physiological effects of the fever is the acceleration of metabolic processes in general. Fever increases oxygen uptake and renders white blood cells more aggressive against bacteria, fungi or viruses. By making the cells more permeable, The immune system is able to discharge into the bloodstream more aggressive substances against infectious organisms and increase their phagocytic (destructive) capability.

Fever within physiological limits can have many beneficial effects and will not produce any harm to normal cells that are able to cope with the higher metabolic demand. Human cells under specific metabolic conditions, such as cancer cells or infected cells, can be seriously challenged by thermic stress and may even be killed by it. Those who are critically ill lessen their chances of survival by suppressing their fever with drugs.

As long as your temperature remains below 102 F there is no need to lower it. These viruses do not reproduce at higher body temperatures. A slight fever should help you get rid of the virus quicker and make you feel better much sooner. If your fever is over 102 F or you feel the need to use any medications, you should seek the advice of a health care professional.

Lifestyle Changes Will Make a Difference
Common Sense Advice On Prevention and Treatment
Here are some good common sense ideas to help you stay healthy this year.

At the first sign of illness, slow down immediately and rest to prevent the illness from taking hold. It is better to stop activity in the short term rather than having your activity stop you. Take an Infrared Fever sweat if possible. (Viruses and bacteria can’t handle the heat.) If that is not available to you take a long, hot bath, towel-dry and stay bed for a deep rest.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and remember stress intensifies cold and flu symptoms.
  • Eat very lightly at first sign of feeling badly in a non-specific way. It is especially useful to cut back to only fruits and vegetables. Follow your body’s inclination. If you are hungry, eat more and if not, eat less.

Good nutrition always remains important in maintaining a strong immune system to combat viruses.

  • Chicken soup does help the symptoms. Chicken contains a natural amino acid called cysteine. Cysteine can thin the mucus in the lungs and make it less sticky so it you can be expel it more easily. Campbell’s soup won’t work as well as the homemade version. Make the soup hot and spicy with plenty of organic, kosher Cayenne Pepper. The spices will trigger a sudden release of watery fluids in the mouth, throat, and lungs. This will help thin down the respiratory mucus, so it’s easier to cough up and expel.
  • Rest. It is important to rest and take it easy throughout the time you are ill. The time you are ill may be longer if you do not allow yourself to recuperate and recover completely. If you exercise regularly, you needn’t stop. However, you should definitely cut back on the intensity until you feel better.
  • Wash your hands frequently and try to keep them away from your nose and eyes. Use disposable tissues as opposed to cloth handkerchiefs. If you are caring for someone else with a cold, please WASH YOUR HANDS every time you have contact with them. This will protect you from being infected.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Water is the best with Royal Oregano to clear the lungs. Try to drink at least eight to ten glasses of clean, alkalizing, filtered, restructured water a day. This will help the stuffiness and help the secretions loosen. Since approximately 70% of our body weight is water and water makes up over 80% of our brain and 90% of our blood, it is an integral part of everything the body does. Avoid using tap water. Water therapy (using chemical free, clean, restructured and alkalizing water) is a vital part of any health program. Following a protocol using water purification and enhancing systems that produce a high rate of hydration allows superior and faster metabolic processes to occur within the cell, making it better able to flush toxins and move nutrients to where they are needed.
  • It is very important to stop all milk products. This includes not only milk, but ice cream, all yogurt except plain and especially cheese. Lactaid milk is not acceptable. This step is helpful to decrease the extra mucous that dairy products can cause you to produce.
  • Eating refined sugars weakens your immune system and promotes yeast overgrowth. This includes all sodas which have eight teaspoons of sugar per can. Honey, molasses, maple syrup, date sugar, cane sugar, corn sugar, beet sugar, corn syrup, fructose, lactose and other refined carbohydrates are known promoters of yeast growth. Reducing or eliminating these in your diet will help your immune system.

Many people will drink large amounts of orange juice when they are sick. The simple sugars (fructose) in the juice will actually make you feel worse. Try to avoid all juices, including organic juices or ones with no sugar added; Gatorade type sports drinks also need to be avoided. If you must have a juice use diluted organic apple juice; do not use orange. Lemon and water with organic kosher Cayenne Pepper will help.

    • Extra vitamin C is also helpful. You can take 500-2,000 mg every 1-2 hours. The only side effect you may have are loose stools at higher doses. If this happens decreasing the dose will quickly clear up the symptoms.
    • Vitamin A in large doses may be helpful. 200,000 units twice a day for FIVE days. (eight of the 25,000 unit capsules twice a day). Children can take half the dose. Even though vitamin A is oil soluble this dose is very safe if not taken for long periods.
    • However if you are pregnant you should not use it.
    • Avoid prolonged exposure to artificial light since this puts the body under great stress.
    • Royal Oregano and Bandits Oil are essential oils that are highly antiviral.
    • Garlic - one of the safest and most versatile herbs, a universal tonic, a natural germicide. It is an immune system booster, purges the liver and aids digestion.
    • Omega-3 Oils - These oils have long been known for their ability to protect us from viral, bacteria and fungal infection. It is a very important.
    • Alternative or natural medicine has a lot to offer in fighting the bacteria and viruses behind colds and the flu. It ranges from state-of-the-art energy medicine, Infrared therapies, age old herbs like Oil of Oregano and alternative antibiotics like Theta Super Silver and Vitamin O.
    • Vitamin D: We all know that vitamin C has been shown to effectivly reduce the frequency and severity of flu and colds. Vitamin D and the minerals selenium and zinc have also been found very effective

      A host of studies have recently concluded that the sunshine vitamin plays an important role in boosting the human immune system. There is persuasive evidence that supplementation with the right amount of vitamin D can prevent the onset of a flu or cold.

      The analysis of a randomized controlled trial showed that people taking 800 IU/day of vitamin D were three times less likely to come down with the flu or cold than those receiving placebo. 2000 IU a day essentially eliminated cold and flu cases altogether.

      Another study by found that giving supplements of vitamin D to a group of volunteers reduced the occurrence of colds and flu by 70 per cent over three years. The researchers said that the vitamin stimulated natural immunity to viruses and bacteria. They believe that the decline in vitamin D levels between November and March could be the reason for the peak in colds and flu during winter.

      Vitamin D, once noted only for its bone-building properties, may be a key nutritional factor in enhancing immune function. The proper functioning your immune system depends on the body’s store of vitamin D.

      Those of us living in a northern climate simply cannot get enough sun exposure in the winter to reach proper vitamin D levels. We need to supplement. Given all its other health benefits, such as a decrease in the risk of certain cancers, insulin regulation, muscle strength and cardiovascular function, the decision to supplement with vitamin D should be easy.

      Vitamin D may not be the first supplement to be labeled as a “wonder vitamin” but it is the first to live up to and surpass all expectations.
